2014 Dark Jewel Classic Nominations Released

May 12th, 2014

The Darley operation is set to have a strong hand in the 2014 Dark Jewel Classic; with trainer John O’Shea including three mares in the nominations for the Group 3 event that will be held at Scone this weekend.

Headlining the Darley charge in the Dark Jewel Classic is talented mare Aerobatics, who scored her second straight victory in The Darley Crown (1300m) at Hawkesbury on May 3 in her final race start.

Aerobatics was specifically set for the Group 3 event by former Darley trainer Peter Snowden and was far too good for the rest of the field that also included stablemates Seaside and Pleiades, who are also a chance of backing up in the Dark Jewel Classic this weekend.

Leading Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse is also a chance of having multiple runners in the field for the $200,000 race after including Cosmic Endeavour and Miss Stellabelle in the acceptances.

Cosmic Endeavour has performed consistently throughout her racing career and produced a number of impressive performances during the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival; finishing fourth in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 29, second in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 12 before winning the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on April 19.

The Northern Meteor filly finished a narrow third behind Aerobatics in the Darley Crown and is an excellent chance of turning-the-tables on the five-year-old mare.

Miss Stellabelle finished just behind her stablemate in The Darley Crown and will be chasing her first race win since she took out the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong on September 7 in 2012.

Chris Waller-trained Arinosa is the highest rated filly or mare in the nominations for the Dark Jewel Classic, but is no certainty to take her place in the field after being included in the nominations for both the Group 3 BRC Sprint and Listed Juanmo Stakes at Doomben in Brisbane.

Arinosa has not been seen at the races since she pulled up lame after running 15th in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22, but was cleared to return to racing after competing in two barrier trials.

Waller-trained She’s Clean is also a chance of making her return to the races in the Dark Jewel Classic after finishing tenth behind stablemate Catkins in the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes at the end of her 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign.

There is plenty of talent in the 2014 Dark Jewel Classic nominations; with Avoid Lightning, Chatham House, Gold Epona, Grand Daughter, I’m In The Money, Lilliburlero, Myamira, Oh My Papa, Sweet Talking Woman and Two Blue also a chance of contesting the race.
