Having returned to the track in great form this season, Avoid Lightning has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite for success in the 2014 Dark Jewel Classic, currently offered at odds of $4.20.

Claiming seven victories and five places from only 19 competitive race starts to date, Avoid Lightning contested a strong and consistent 2012/13 summer and autumn preparation; winning the Listed W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) and claiming minor placings in both the Listed Oakbank Stakes and Group 3 Irwin Stakes (1100m) before running on to finish a competitive third in the Group 1 Robert Sangster (1200m).

Finishing fifth amongst classy company in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m) first-up this year, the Blevic mare produced a keen turn of foot in the final straight to take out the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) on a soaked Randwick track on March 29th, and again performed well to finish second in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) last time out.

Allocated the somewhat awkward barrier 11, Avoid Lightning has been confirmed to be partnered by jockey Tim Clarke for the third time in 2014 this weekend.

Claiming three wins and ten places from 27 competitive starts to date, Miss Stellabelle is currently sole occupant of the second line of betting for success in the 2014 Dark Jewel Classic, offered at generous $6 odds.

Returning to racing in great touch this time in, the Dehere mare was unlucky to finish second in each of the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) and Group 3 Vamos Stakes (1400m) first-up, and has continued to build in form and class in finishing sixth amongst classy competition in the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) and fourth in the Group 3 Darley Crown (1300m) most recently.

Allocated the ideal barrier three, Miss Stellabelle is a great chance of justifying her current odds; having been confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Brenton Avdulla this weekend.

Steadily building to the task this time in, Aerobatics arguably offers punters the best value for money of all leading contenders in this weekend’s Dark Jewel Stakes, currently featured at a quote of $6.50 for success, or $2.40 to run a place.

Finishing seventh in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute Quality (1200m) first-up on March 15th, the Exceed And Excel mare was unlucky to finish third in the Birthday Card Stakes after being hampered for a run in the final straight, and while again blocked for a clear racing line when fifth in the Sapphire Stakes, returned to the winner’s circle in finishing a length ahead of Plucky Belle in the Darley Crown last time out.

While allocated the wide barrier 12, trainer John O’Shea is confident the retaining jockey Christian Reith will once again get the best from his runner this weekend.

Securing several impressive results over five competitive starts in 2014, punters have jumped all over opening odds of nearly $15 for talented mare Lilliburlero; currently registering the four-year-old as clear $10 market mover.
